Drugged driving can have serious consequences

It is no secret in South Carolina that being caught with illegal drugs can have severe legal repercussions. As such, it is hardly surprising that if you are found driving while under the influence of these drugs, you could also face criminal charges. However, something that not everyone realizes is that even prescription drugs can get you into trouble if they are in your system at the time that you are stopped.

The problem is that charges of driving under the influence refers not only to alcohol, but also to medication. This includes certain drugs that you may have been instructed to take by your doctor. Unfortunately, as medication can have a detrimental effect on your reactions, coordination and ability to make decisions, it is considered dangerous to have in your system when you plan to drive.

However, evidence of drug use can remain in your system for weeks, so it can be hard to prove if a driver is still under the influence. Even so, as this article on drug charges explains, some states have laws that make it a crime to be found with any trace of specific substances in your system. Before you know it, you could be faced with criminal charges and the threat of conviction.

It is vital to know the laws in your home state, so it may be helpful to have the advice of an attorney, particularly if you are already facing drug charges. He or she can explain the nature of the charges and might be able to assist you with forming your defense and protecting your future.
